Courses – National Certificate for Dental Nurses

The National Certificate is one of the qualifications approved by the General Dental Council (GDC) for statutory registration which became mandatory for all dental nurses from 31st July 2008. The GDC is the organisation which protects the public by regulating dentists and dental care professionals in the UK. Under the GDC regulations, unqualified dental nurses may only work under supervision as trainees provided they are enrolled on a theoretical training course at an approved training centre.

In order to be awarded the qualification, a candidate must complete their Record of Experience in addition to passing the National Certificate Examination.

In order to enter the National Certificate Examination, a candidate must:

  • be in employment as a trainee dental nurse
  • undertake a theoretical course of training at an NEBDN accredited centre
  • complete a Record of Experience requiring the support of a dentist who will be required to validate workplace activities

Student Support System

Your tutor will create an Individual Learning Plan ( ILP) for you at the induction session. Through creating this your tutor will assess your needs as a learner. This will be achieved through having a ‘one-to one’ discussion, and by using learning styles questionnaires. From evaluating these, a plan to support you throughout the course will be developed. This ILP will be completed at the end of each session, and updated through periodic reviews during the course.

The tutor will be available before and after sessions to discuss your progression with you. You will also be able to contact your tutor in between sessions with any questions you may have. You will be able to submit your homework and gain valuable feedback in this way.

The Academy will make every effort to provide specific support or equipment to meet your needs. Below are some examples:

  • Work sheets produced in clear large text, written by a practicing tutor and examiner
